The research organisation Centrum výzkumu Řež (CVŘ) was founded in 2002 as 100% daughter company of ÚJV Řež (NRI – Nuclear Research Institute). Nowadays, the company has more than 300 employees.

On the frontline of power generation research

The main aim of the research organisation is research, development and innovations in the field of power generation, especially nuclear. CVŘ owns unique research infrastructure such as experimental research reactors LVR-15 and LR-0 and technological experimental circuits. Significant modernization of the infrastructure was carried out within years 2012-2017 due to realization of the SUSEN project.

The core activities of CVŘ involve fundamental and applied research on experimental research reactors LVR-15 and LR-0. Another activities are arising from the participation of CVŘ in the international Jules Horowitz Reactor project. No less important are national and international projects, especially FP7 projects.

CVŘ is a member of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) and since 2010 represents the Czech Republic in the EERA managing body – Executive Committee, thereby participating in the realization of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan). CVR is also a member and co-founder of the Technology Platform ‘Sustainable Energy CR’.

Energy Well: safe and flexible atomic energy 

Energy Well is a patented small modular reactor developed by Research Center Řež. The project uses the latest knowledge in the field of salt smelting technologies, which come from the Czech Republic, thanks to grants from the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Energy Well is a unique solution responding to the growing need for reliable power. The combination of long service life, portability and simplicity with a strong and unquestionable focus on safety paves the way for a wide range of applications.

Our goal is to bring a safe and easily portable power plant to places with a desperate need for a stable source of energy to produce heat, electricity or hydrogen. The primary,  secondary and tertiary cooling circuits and all support systems are assembled at the factory and then shipped as individual units to the site. This concept is close to the plug-and-play philosophy and represents a unique technical solution for small modular reactors.

The operating site consists of a containment structure ready for a specified number of units. After 7 years of operation, the primary container is left to cool down for 3 years. Meanwhile, the primary container is replaced with a new one that contains fresh fuel. After 3 years of cooling, the original container is returned to the factory for refueling and maintenance.
